The black & white format is as old as photography itself, and yet it remains timeless. It allows viewers to connect more deeply with the subject and the photographer to explore the interplay of light and shadow, and to highlight textures in a way that color photography often can't. Black and white photography emphasizes composition, light, shadow, and texture, forcing photographers to rely on these elements to create compelling images. Moreover, its inherent lack of reality affords the photographer greater creative freedom. In this presentation, I discuss the virtues of black & white and how it can make one a better photographer. I discuss the types of scenes and subject matter that lend themselves to black & white and how, with practice, one can learn to see beyond color and envision the world in shades of gray.
